Coaching CPD in Malta

Arpad Baby, Lottie Martin & Ferenc Bucsi

Worcester Crocodiles U18’s Coach Lottie Martin has just returned from her second overseas trip assisting at SPR Travel’s International Waterpolo Camp.

Taking place in Pretty Bay, Birzebbugia, Malta Lottie has had the chance to watch and assist Head Coach Arpad Baby and goal keeper Ferenc Bucsi, both from Hungary originally, put the attendees through their paces.

Arpad has played and won trophies with Hungarian and Spanish national teams. He has coached New Zealand’s Canterbury Waterpolo Club and New Zealand’s U18’s National team.

Assisting at a camp with such a recognised player and coach is a brilliant opportunity for Crocs young coach, Lottie, who will be bringing lots of fresh ideas back to our Thursday night training sessions.

Malta embraces waterpolo, with it being a popular sport to play and watch. Many international events have been held in the country in August 2025 it sees U18 Women’s European Championships taking place.

If your player or team are looking for training with sun, outdoor pools and or sea pitches contact SPR Travel Malta – European Sports Camps.

Introduction To Water Polo Sessions

Worcester Crocodiles Water Polo Club are pleased to announce new hour long, weekly sessions called Introduction to Water Polo. Taken in the shallow end of our home pool @ Kings School, Worcester the sessions aim to build on the basics of water polo in a fun and enjoyable way. Anyone showing confidence them progresses to our normal training sessions and hopefully club representation at |The Midland League.

The sessions run Sunday afternoons 5-6p.m and are open to anyone under 16 years old and of any swim ability. Available over the summer holidays, if you would like your child to try something different do not hesitate to contact membership@worcestercrocs.co.uk to secure a place.

James Hollick (12) was one of the first people to try these sessions, he said “The introduction sessions were really fun and I’ve learnt lots of new skills in a short time. It’s a great way to carry on swimming and everyone has been really welcoming.” James represented the club in his first Midland |League |||U16’s match this month, well done James!

Crocs have recently been awarded a Worcester Community Grant, administered by Worcester City Council, to enable these sessions to take place. We hope this funding assistance can help boost membership and raise awareness of water polo to the local community.

Return To Our Home Pool

October 2024 saw Worcester Crocodiles return to their refurbished “home” pool, Kings School Pool, Worcester. The pool had been closed for over 12 months having a complete update and overhaul.

This means a return to a full program of training for Worcester Crocodiles. It also means senior training can start in earnest with the hope senior teams can re enter their appropriate leagues in 2025.

Early indications are everyone is enjoying being back in their “home” pool and the intake of new members has already begun along with some intense fitness training for those who have been out of the water for over a year!

If you’d like to give water polo a try use the contact form or email membership@worcestercrocs.co.uk.

Under 16’s Inter Regional Championships

Worcester Crocodiles are proud of the mix of players they have, being situated in West Midlands but close to the boarder of Wales we often have players representing different regions/counties.

July 2024 saw 4 of our junior players represent their various regions at under 16’s Inter Regionals all around the country. The division you play in is based on the result for your team at U14’s, 18 months prior.

Jacob Lewis, representing West Midlands, travelled to Liverpool to hopefully continue the teams success. Already seeded highly in Division 1, because of their win at U14’s, the team continued to show their skills and dominance taking 4 wins from 4 games. Another Gold medal for West Midlands Open 2009 and younger team. We look forward to see if they can do the triple at U18’s in 2026.

West Midlands 2009 and younger Open Team 2024

Courtney Onens and Eleri Toombs, also representing West Midlands, travelled to Walsall to take part in the Division 2 female competition. Many of the girls, Courtney and Eleri included, were playing up in terms of age group. The team showed great determination and teamwork, improving with every game. What a great experience for our 2 new Crocs.

West Midlands 2009 and Younger Female Team 2024

Evan Pugh, representing Wales, achieved his first international selection for this competition. Wales did not enter a team at U14’s so they went straight to Division 2 to break into the tournament. Travelling to Bolton the mixed aged team worked hard and gained invaluable experience. We look forward to following Evans international successes over the coming years.

Howden Grassroots Heroes Winners!

Lottie Martin has been selected to win the first ever Howden Grassroots Heroes competition, with thanks to nominee Courtney Onens, Worcester Crocodiles have won £500.

This was the first time Howden had run this competition to celebrate the unsung heroes behind every athlete. Run across all sports, players were asked to nominate their coach and explain why they were their hero. This is Courtney’s description of Lottie –

”In my opinion Lottie is the best coach I’ve every had as she’s an inspiration to us all, we all really look up to her, not only as a coach but also as a player. Lottie has given me my confidence back and has made me that player I am today, I am going to be forever thankful for that. Lottie always believed in me even when I didn’t. When she takes training she always makes it fun and if we don’t understand anything she will take the time to explain it. Lottie saw the true potential in me when nobody else did she helped me so much and she will continue to help other people just as much as she helped me. We as Crocs are incredibly proud to have Lottie as a coach.”

When asked about her nomination and win Lottie explained what it meant to her – “Having recently qualified as a Swim England Water Polo Coach (Level 2) and be recognised for my coaching ability by Courtney has massively boosted my confidence and enjoyment of coaching. To receive recognition for my coaching methods and knowing they are helping improve the younger generation at grassroot level is amazing. Having been a player at both a young age and today, I understand the importance of having a supportive role model. I hope to provide this to every player I coach, especially females in water polo who tend to be a minority.”

Worcester Crocodiles are very proud of both Lottie and Courtney and will be using the money to purchase a new set of home and away hats. We hope this is a sign that 2024 will be a good year for the club and our “home” pool will reopen soon enabling all teams to return to training.

Worcester Crocodiles 2023 Round Up

At the beginning of 2023 Worcester Crocodiles ”home” pool was closed for refurbishment. This brought about many challenges for the club with the nearest pool suitable for training in Tewkesbury and the nearest “match ready” pool in Hereford.

We lost all adult (over 18’s) training because Tewkesbury is not deep enough for a good training session and we also withdrew our Mens team from the league. 2023 was all about developing our junior section.

A very young under 16’s mixed team took part in The Midland Youth League during the summer of 2023. A difficult season, the team grew in confidence and experience throughout. Finishing with only one win is tough but with no pool, no regular training together and being so much younger than most the players held their heads high.

For a second year running Worcester Crocodiles were able to enter The Midland Youth Junior Men’s League in 2023. After coming a respectable 4th in 2022/23 the lads were hoping to better their fledgling performance. Many thanks to the Welsh boys who came and assisted the team, they managed to improve and come in 3rd place! Will Bamborough was the team hot shot with a total of 32 goals this season and Harry Davey was the teams Major King with 11 fouls all season, hazard of being a pit defender! We all look forward to seeing this team develop and improve as the years go on.

Junior Mens Team 2023/24

The ladies team were defending their title in 2023/24 but with illness, unavailability and the lack of training the team struggled to get off the ground. In fact some matches we only had the bare minimum of players attend, which was disappointing. The team managed to finish on a high though beating second placed Solihull, coming from 5-1 down in the first quarter. Final placing was bottom of the table but the last 3 places were very close, all teams had the same amount of points it was decided on goal difference. Team hot shot was Lottie Martin with 19 goals she was also Major Queen with 11 fouls all season. Hopefully 2024 will see the ladies able to train together again and them being a threat to the title once more.

Inter-Regional Gold for Worcester Crocodiles Jacob

Worcester Crocodiles player Jacob Lewis returns from his first inter-regional tournament with a Gold medal.

The last weekend in November 2022 saw the U14’s Boys’ Inter-regional Championships take place at Walsall Gala Baths. Nine teams were split into two groups to battle for the title.

West Midlands Warriors were put in group A with London Sharks, East, Ireland and East Midlands. As always being the first competition in that age group what standard the other teams were was anyones guess.

The “Warriors” first match was against local rivals East Midlands. A comfortable win 8 – 4 to West Midlands ensured a good start to the weekends tournament.

Next was London Sharks and another comfortable win (4-2). The final match of the day was against Ireland. Always worrying an “international” fixture at this level but West Midlands Warriors kept it together claiming another victory (5-3).

Finishing the first day top of the table the team had an early start the next day with their final group match against East.

Another comfortable win against East meant they finished top of the table and faced 2nd placed North West Tigers from Group B in the first semi final. A game that was far more fairly matched the Warriors lived up to their name battling right until the end, in fact the last 20 seconds brought the winning goal to West Midlands. Final score West Midlands Warriors 9 -8 North West.

Gold medal match was against familiar Ireland. Having played them in the group stages this should be in the bag and it was. An easy 13- 6 win to West Midlands Warriors.

The second ever U14’s Inter-regional tournament win for The West Midlands boys’ we look forward to following the teams progress over the next 4 years.

Worcester Crocodiles Junior Men Midlands League Campaign

Worcester Crocodiles are pleased to announce their first under 18’s mens team to take part in the Midlands league for the 2022/23 season.

Joining 5 other well established local teams Worcester will gain valuable experience and pool time being part of this transitional league from juniors (under 16’s) to mens water polo.

The league runs October to March and is usually dominated by local rivals Cheltenham. Post covid it has been great to see our junior side grow and it is testament to the hard work put in by the committee, coaches, players and parents that we now have a viable team in this league.

Head coach David Cash said “ this season is all about being competitive and our players learning about and adapting to this big step up. Not only have they competed in the first two games of the season, they have thrived. I am really pleased for them.”

Worcester Crocodiles Ladies 2022/2023 Midlands League Campaign

The Midlands ladies league runs September to March. This year only 5 teams from around the region intend to battle it out to be league winners.

Crocs ladies have come second for the past two years, 2021/22 was particularly close losing on goal difference only on the matches between the eventual winners Boldmere, when over the whole tournament Crocs had a considerably bigger goal difference.

Hopefully 2022/23 will eventually go the ladies way and they will bring home the bling they deserve.

Good luck ladies. 🐊
